The State of Ag in Cuba

The State of Ag in Cuba
April 18, 2016

NASHVILLE, Tenn (RFD-TV) 11 million people live in Cuba, and the vast
majority of the food they eat is imported. That's the reason congressmen
from Louisiana and Arkansas recently traveled there, with the hope of
making connections and gaining support for the ending of the trade
embargo which has been in place for over 55 years. ?

The Rene O. Reine Garcia Farm Co-op spans 1,200 acres, providing Cubans
with milk, beef, pork and the grains needed to feed those animals.
Official Ambassador Juan Jose Leon tells the group that 127 farmers are
part of this co-op – and all of them share a single 1949 tractor.

Officials from both countries held a meeting to talk about developing
trade between the two countries. Congressmen Rick Crawford of Arkansas,
Ralph Abraham of Louisiana, and Louisiana State Senator Francis Thompson
of Delhi spoke at length with the North America Director for the Cban
Minister of Foreign Trade, Maria de la Luz B'Hamel.
They're looking to end the trade embargo through legislation like
Congressman Crawford's bill, the Cuba Agricultural Exports Act. The bill
currently has 25 co-sponsors, including Congressman Abraham. Crawford's
staff says they need about 100 co-sponsors to have the measure go before
the House for a vote.
